The Lake Springfield Triathlon is seeking volunteer paddlers to escort swimmers for the annual Triathlon on Lake Springfield. The triathlon is next Saturday, July 30 and we need boats to line the safety perimeter, a few jet skiers to ferry doctors & rescue personnel and a whole lot of paddlers. No one is expected to perform rescues, just line the course and provide a place to rest for the swimmers. They can hold onto your vessel as long as they don’t make forward movement and resume swimming when ready. Of course, they all need encouragement, so, feel free to cheer them on as well. Volunteers get a free breakfast and a T-shirt. Here are the details if you want to help. The first group goes in the water at 7:00 AM and we’ll have a boater safety briefing at 6:30 AM. Yes, that’s EARLY…. There will be three levels of participants (color-coded by hat color) and multiple groups for each level. The last swimmers are usually out of the water by 9:00 a.m.The Lindsey Bridge Launch ramp will be closed since it is used as a staging area for the swim and the bike ride portions of the triathlon. Vessel launches can be done at either the sailboat launch or the Harbor Point Launch area east of the Beach House in Center Park. The launch points are marked on the map (see pic) and the entry & exit points for the swim route are also marked. We recommend bringing a throwable flotation device and a whistle, if you have them. ... See MoreSee Less
